This night has taught me that I really really didn't like Furious Sleep. Was nice to catch all of Um's set this time. Apparently I have Badger and Sarah to thank for the fairy cake I got, I shall have to say hello/request something unsuitable in the DJ booth some day, and was nice to speak to Jah_Pat briefly. Wow, WAN, getting people to meet since 2001. Or something. Published by Robadob at 1:46am on Thu 23rd February 2006. I don't get the Furious Sleep thing either, at all. I've always thought singing should be a prime atribute for a singer, but maybe it's just me. And it's all a bit prog isn't it? Now CRS*, that's much more like it. Published by hairyarsenal at 9:03am on Thu 23rd February 2006. I alwasy found CRS a bit poor . Published by General lee at 10:05am on Thu 23rd February 2006. I didn't even like the Furious Sleep last night, and I'm in them! A week of opposites for us. Sat we played our best gig to a packed audience in London, and last night we played our worst to a few people in Cambridge. Bad gig. Very bad. Still onwards and up wards Don't agree with
the 'singing should be a prime atribute's comment though. It's all horses for courses though Published by jake_furious at 10:48am on Thu 23rd February 2006. In defence of the Furious Sleep: 1) They had an absolute shocker last night. They're shambolistas at the best of times, but last night really wasn't the best time to see them. 2) For some reason, it really didn't work in that venue. They're more suited to dingy subterranean holes. 3) Their rhythm section is fantastic. 4) They almost have too many ideas. Either that or attention deficit disorder. It's hard to do the whole multiple changes in time signature/post-post-post-post punk thing without coming across as self-indulgent. 5) As such, they have 2 choices. (1) be arch, beardstrokey and dull. (2) be flippant, raucous, seemingly disdainful in their approach (wear frocks, have conversations mid-song, etc). Either way people are going to think it's showing the audience disrespect, and they're gonna wind people up and come across as self-indulgent (which, having chatted to them all a couple of times, they certainly don't seem to be). They could quite easily write spiky 3-minute pop songs as they're all great players, but obviously choose to make utterly inaccessable post-punk-rock. Fair play to them for doing so. 6) Their bass player has excellent legs 7) They sound neither like binman indie nor like retro pub rock. That in itself makes them on Our Side. They seem more concerned with doing Their Stuff than Getting Popular And Famous Like. 8) "I dig repetition, but would defend to the death the Furious Sleep's right not to." Voltaire (featuring Mark E. Smith) That said, tFS weren't at the races at all last night and were, by their own standards, awful. The Resistance are just consistently jawdroppingly genuinely movingly we'll-remember-when-we-were-the-three-punters-and-a-dog (Hairyarsenal was the dog, natch...) SUPERB and if they don't release the greatest album of 2007 on (most probably) Warp records there will be neither justice nor a God*. The new lightshow was great, too. Hooray! Hooray! also to Um, the thinking man's bit of idiot savant garde rough. In a parallel universe Um is the next James Bond and the UN Secretary General at the same time, and there is world peace and less public school mysogyny in MI5 or MI6 or whichever, and 'A Last Blast' would be number one foreverandeveramen. Happy birthday Green Mind. Hooray to all concerned. And top cakemaking, Badger... *I appreciate the irony of this sentence. Published by Matt Abysmal at 10:51am on Thu 23rd February 2006. I used "sing" in the loosest possible terms :) - I guess its about knowing your range. And of course its just my opinion - just don't do it for me, is all. Published by hairyarsenal at 10:51am on Thu 23rd February 2006. He had very, very good legs (the one with the silk neglige type get-up) Published by badger at 10:59am on Thu 23rd February 2006. Thanks Matt. It doesn't get any clearer or articulate than that. Hey hairy, no offence taken. We are a niche band playing music that we enjoy. We know are never going to be the next artic monkeys or cold play, and have no aspirations to be that sort of band. It's all about fun and entertaining people who want something different. Happy Birthday Green Mind. May there be many more. Published by jake_furious at 11:26am on Thu 23rd February 2006. Cheers Jake. Looking forward to seeing you on a better night for it. Small, sweaty venues are your forte and i think we realised that last night. When's your next show? I'll make sure i'm there. Published by Green Mind at 11:32am on Thu 23rd February 2006. I hope you'll never try to be the next coldplay.I can hardly cope with the one that is about :). Published by baileys at 11:38am on Thu 23rd February 2006. always thought singing should be a prime atribute for a singer, but maybe it's just me. i seem to remember Hairy going on a big rant about how it didn't matter that Pete Doherty couldn't sing and how there were lots of wonderful singers who couldn't hold a note... Published by Green Mind at 11:43am on Thu 23rd February 2006. Furious Sleep were
also unlucky with the audience last night. There were people that looked really
surprised and even a bit .. scared. He's got a point Hairy... Published by Jaywalker at 11:56am on Thu 23rd February 2006. There was a bit of an air of almost homophobia from a couple of the dudes in suits last night. Part of their reason for hating TFS was that they were wearing dresses. Published by Green Mind at 11:57am on Thu 23rd February 2006. Hey Simon. We're not playing back here until March 24th. It's at the loft. I remember it being good up there from the interlaken days (not the noise limiter though). No need for a debate on my singing abilities. I know full well I'm not a great singer in the traditional sense. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I love the way my voice sounds and how it fits in with TFS and that's all that matters. Published by jake_furious at 11:58am on Thu 23rd February 2006. I'm going to side with TFS - I've seen them a couple of times and enjoyed them... I like their prog-rock influences, but they're not a prog-rock band... Published by CamRich at 11:59am on Thu 23rd February 2006. Haha, so you noticed that too.Funny though, i mean the look on their faces.I liked the dresses idea :),Dave's dress was really nice. Published by baileys at 12:01pm on Thu 23rd February 2006. Dave's dress was found after a long night out, hung on the green dragon bridge. Hope it's not being sort after as part of any police investigations! Published by jake_furious at 12:07pm on Thu 23rd February 2006. I'm sorry to hear TFS had an off night- I'd have been there if I was in the country at the moment. (I should be around for the Loft gig I think). TFS are one of my favourite bands when they're on form- their recordings are well worth checking out as well. If you didn't like them last night, check out the album. Their songs are chock full of melodies, riffs and classic pop songwriting which is then blown apart and superbly augmented by their rhythmic complexity, so there! Published by mwhite at 12:11pm on Thu 23rd February 2006. I'll make sure i get to the loft gig. It's good up there and a vast improvement on the terrible layout and sound situation when we played for Alternation, many moons ago. Published by Green Mind at 12:17pm on Thu 23rd February 2006. I'd just like to say that I thought the sound was great last night. Probably the first time I've ever been to a a TFS gig where I could actually hear what Jake was saying/singing/shouting, and they were all the better for it. Obviously a slight shame that they weren't as tight as I have seen them, but it didn't put me off. Crystal clear sound for the Resistance too, and they also played the best set I've seen them do. To be honest, I have found some of their gigs to be a bit frustrating in the past, especially when they stretch out the distortion/noise/buildup sections of their material. But last night was spot on - top beats, top riffs and it all seemed to slot together very well. They also looked like they were enjoying it too, which is always a good sign. Published by BennyG at 2:27pm on Thu 23rd February 2006. To be fair to TFS, I seem to remember them playing at a Goo before and going down pretty well. Last night was probably a little too incoherent for the Tree and, I guess that wouldn't have mattered at the Portland et al. Felt a bit sorry for Um as well. He played a great set which would've worked really well if the place had been busier. However, The Resistance played the best set I think I've seen from them. Certainly showed themselves capable of headline status. Maybe next year we'll get all the planned bands to play rather than lose them to flu etc. Who's coming to Aruuuuuuuuuu tonight? Published by grabsplatter at 3:42pm on Thu 23rd February 2006. Yeah, in defence of The Furious Sleep, they're not a band that I could say were rubbish, just not my thing, and I get the impression that even on a great night they would still not be my thing, I can't think of any bands I like that do the changing time signatures every 30 seconds thing. And yeah, it was all a bit ADD for me on the songwriting front, with narry a repeated melody/riff/motif/chord structure throughout a song. Now, I understand this is the intention, but I felt like I was standing in on a songwriting session. Published by Robadob at 3:51pm on Thu 23rd February 2006. If Der Furious Sleep got some Tunes, they would be tremendous. Coincidently, their drum and bass combo is tremendous... However, based upon Jah_Pat's Last Theorem; Tremendous Music = Tremendous Noise + Tremendous Tuneage. I want some, ta. As it stands though, and it pains me to say it, they are merely rather avant-rage (i.e average). As ol'Abysmal said, they are on OUR side. But c'mon lads, be really fucking brilliant otherwise, quite frankly Mr Shankly, it ain't worth your and our while. And, need I remind you, it's us versus the world, chaps. Only in their current state, I would want someone other than DFS fighting our corner, unfortunatly. To thread jump,
sorry, I had some nice posh soup for lunch as well today. Only the plastic Also, Happy Birthday
GreenMind, and thanks for the rather lovelingly prepared green cake. I had one
